Este deporte asemeja bastante al que se realiza en un descenso de mountain bike solo que es un deporte sólo apto para bikers experimentados, puesto que se necesita una buena preparación física en este deporte, las piernas son tanto más importantes que la capacidad de concentración y buenos reflejos.
Para realizar este deporte es necesario proteger las zonas más expuestas a golpes como codos, rodillas, tobillos, espalda, hombros, cabeza.
Las bicicletas de snowbike son muy especiales, pues están formadas de un cuadro de acero al que se le une un sillín, un sistema de suspensión, un manillar y un par de esquís en línea. El esquí trasero es largo y está fijo, mientras que el delantero es mucho más corto, está unido al manillar y se mueve para poder girar y tomar una u otra dirección.Durante el siglo pasado, proliferaron los modelos de snowbike y a pesar de que es un invento europero, se ve que en Estados Unidos ya habían invetado hacia 1875 un vehículo muy parecido, una especie de bici a la que le unieron un par esquís.
Este deporte alcanzó su grado máximo de popularidad en los 60, había más de 40 modelos sólo en Europa y 23 países formaban parte de la Federación Internacional de Skibob (FISB), que es la organización encargada de controlar este deporte.
